The Rookwood Trio--soprano Denise June Abbott, tenor Roald Henderson, and pianist Robert Haigler--return to the Art Institute for a fun-filled evening of new works and popular classics. Following upon the success of last year's collaboration with composer David Baker (which brought forth the Chicago premiere of his poignant Song Cycle), the trio will present the world premiere of Baker's Songs for Living and Dying, a six-piece work peppered with jazz and blues that is based on texts by several black American poets. Also featured will be a group of famous American folk songs, as well as the seldom-heard Shostakovich work From Jewish Folk Poetry, a contemporary reworking of ten Jewish folk songs, five of which will be heard at this concert in their original form, which should offer a fascinating comparison. Other work to be included on the diverse and innovative program are Baroque operatic arias by Handel (including, interestingly enough, the original Italian version of an aria later reworked for the Messiah) and vocal duets from the Romantic era by Schumann, Lalo, and Duparc. Saturday, 7:30 PM, Fullerton Hall, Art Institute of Chicago, Michigan and Adams. 472-5964.
