Room and Truck on a Roll

Curious Theatre Branch presents two shows laden with delights. Jenny Magnus's Room is an economical, impressionistic one-woman musical loosely organized around the themes of loss, middle age, and the nature of performance. Whimsical but grounded in genuine emotion, it features musically and lyrically innovative songs she wrote between 1985 and 2007, here given imaginative recorded accompaniment. In the sometimes inspired monologue Truck on a Roll, Beau O'Reilly brilliantly plays his own brilliant character, Truck Bloom, a broken-down, occasionally homeless alcoholic ex-pugilist straight out of Nelson Algren. But at 90 minutes the piece is twice as long as it should be, filled with excrescences and bloated by video sequences in which young folks unconvincingly play tough guys. This Truck needs a road map. --Laura Molzahn a Truck on a Roll runs through 6/9: Fri 8 PM, Sat 9 PM. Room runs through 6/10: Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM. Prop Thtr, 3502 N. Elston, 773-267-6660, $15 or "pay what you can."
