Rooms 18+ Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Thu., Jan. 29, 9:30 p.m. 2015

On their latest self-released recording, Emic/Etic, the young Chicago piano trio Rooms move their sound away from the explicit melody and groove of their eponymous 2013 debut for something more abstract and intuitive. Keyboardist Dan Pierson, bassist Charlie Kirchen, and drummer Matt Carroll haven’t made their music inaccessible or coldly schematic, but they’re clearly trusting more in spontaneous interplay, sketching out loose structures and giving themselves plenty of leeway with each performance. Pierson has moved exclusively to Fender Rhodes, and the band sound seriously patient in letting things develop organically. Unlike, say, Medeski Martin & Wood, who use a similar instrumentation and shape their music on the fly, Rooms display an impressive sense of economy and precision, never lingering over any single idea for too long. For tonight’s performance the trio will be accompanied by video artist Anders Pollak. —Peter Margasak
