Rory Lake's Battle of the Bands, with Jumpsuit, Cougars, Soft Targets, Veterans Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Dec. 13, 8 p.m. 2008

Front man and dork emcee extraordinaire Rory Lake (of Cooler by the Lake and Rory Lake’s Karaoke Dreams, respectively) started this more-or-less annual competition in 2002, and every year the bands seem to get a little bigger. Acts as established as Haymarket Riot and Cougars, two of this year’s contestants, hardly need to do this for exposure, and the prize of free studio time can’t be all that exciting to them—one assumes they’re here because the battle is so goofy and fun. (In my fantasy world, that’d be enough to attract bands like Wilco too, but the logistics would probably get out of hand.) Tonight kicks off the three-day semifinals, which continue on Friday and Saturday; the finals will be held on a date to be announced, likely in January. See myspace.com/rorylakesbattle for updates—and to hear Lake’s best Meat Loaf impersonation on the battle’s theme songs (it’s pretty good). This is the third and last day of the semifinals. The lineup, first band first: the Veterans, Soft Targets, Cougars, and Jumpsuit. -Monica Kendrick

Price: $10, $5 in advance
