Rough Crossing Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 7 2009

Adapted from Ferenc Molnar's 1924 comedy The Play's the Thing, Tom Stoppard's 1985 farce is set on an ocean liner traveling from Cherbourg to New York in 1928. Aboard ship are a group of theater folk--a pair of playwrights, an aging matinee idol, a beautiful leading lady, and a young songwriter with a bizarre speech impediment--rehearsing their latest inane musical, and Stoppard cleverly juxtaposes the characters' personal conflicts with those in the show they're practicing. This is minor Stoppard--smart, show-offy fluff that depends on crisp timing and a sure feel for the period. Director Zachary Davis's staging for the Piccolo Theatre, however, is erratically paced and utterly lacking in 1920s style. Though fitfully funny, the production never builds the comic momentum needed to achieve the zany humor Stoppard intends. --Albert Williams
