Rudolph the Red-hosed Reindeer Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays, Wed., Dec. 22 and Wed., Dec. 29. Continues through Jan. 1 2011

In this 13th edition of Hell in a Handbag Productions's queer Christmas chestnut--perhaps the most insightful and entertaining one yet--slave-driving, money-crazed Santa forces the citizens of Christmastown into a reality television deal he's pitched to the North Pole Network. The premise creates ample opportunity for playwright David Cerda to skewer classist assumptions behind series like Jersey Shore. Previously too swishy for reindeer games, Rudolph is now too swishy for prime time. And this year’s Abominable Drag-Beast is a bitchy Lady Gaga knockoff forever lip-synching in a meat dress. Derek Czeplewski's strong cast display campy ingenuity, while Alex Grelle's slyly vulnerable Rudolph gives the show a disarming poignancy. --Justin Hayford
