Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer | Mary's Attic Theatre | Theater & Performance, Holiday Shows | Chicago Reader

Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays, Saturdays. Continues through Dec. 30 2011

Santa digs animals, Rudolph wears women's underwear, and poor Hermey the elf isn't fabulous enough for his flaming friends. Back for its 14th year, David Cerda's bawdy parody of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer delivers a bracing corrective to holiday sentimentality. Alex Grelle returns as the titular rangifer tarandus, mincing nimbly through brisk musical numbers in his red stockings. Though Santa seems to escape any consequences for his chronic philandering, Rudolph pays the price of being different. Ed Jones plays blowsy, drunken Mrs. Claus to riotous effect. If the topical tea party and Obama jokes fall flat, they aren't really necessary to keep the show fresh. The cast does that. —Keith Griffith
