Ruined Heart: Another Lovestory Between a Criminal & a Whore

After a Manila crime boss and pimp entrusts his hooker girlfriend to his most trusted henchman, the two underlings fall in love and end up marked for death. The plot of this German-Filipino coproduction may sound like a Japanese yakuza thriller from the 90s, but writer-director Khavn stages it as a series of wordless, disorienting, music-driven set pieces. Shot by ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love), the movie unfolds in an urban nightscape of neon, twisting streets, and pools of inky blackness—until the two-thirds mark, when it opens out into a drab daytime of gaudy, grimy public spaces. Khavn wrote all the music, which ranges across different styles of kitsch but mainly draws on Asian approximations of 60s pop and soul. In Filipino with subtitles.
