Ruined Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 14 2008

Mama Nadi has the grim cunning of Mother Courage and the oily bonhomie of Rick from Casablanca--and she needs both as she tries to stay alive and in business in one of the world's great killing grounds, Congo. Constant war, routine corruption, and unspeakable atrocity--not to mention drunk, horny, heavily armed soldiers--swirl around her weird little brothel in the jungle. But she maintains her equilibrium until beautiful, smart, damaged Sophie joins her stable of girls. Built from interviews with Congolese women, Lynn Nottage's 2007 play slides toward wish fulfillment at the end. On the way there, though, it's harrowing and beautiful. Astonishments include the sense of intimacy among Kate Whoriskey's ensemble, Dominic Kanza's music, Derek McLane's set, and Condola Phyleia Rashad's Sophie. --Tony Adler
