Runaway Divas

The images are crisp, the color pops, and the sound is generally good, but in all other respects this comedy, written, produced, directed by, and starring Aleksandra Hodowany and Monika Szewerniak, is stupefyingly bad. The premise—some Chicago Polish-Americans and their neighbors are sucked in by a phony modeling agency scam—might have worked with a more naturalistic treatment. Instead, the tone flounders between early John Waters and an after-school special. The dialogue is banal, the jokes witless and crude. It would be unfair to expect expert thespianism from the mostly amateur cast, but this is a movie only the filmmakers' friends and family could love. In English and subtitled Polish. 101 min.
