A winner despite being a tad overlong and sentimental, this 2005 South Korean drama showcases rising star Cho Seung-woo (Chunhyang), who plays the autistic 20-year-old son of a careworn but resourceful mother (Kim Mi-sook). Having discovered over time that running motivates and empowers her disabled boy, she enters him in a grueling long-distance race. First-time writer-director Jeong Yun-cheol (who spent two years interviewing and studying real-life autistic marathoner Bae Hyeong-jin) draws a convincing psychological portrait of a family torn by love, despair, resentment, and guilt, while Cho delivers a performance that rivals Dustin Hoffman's in Rain Man. Also known as Marathon. In Korean with subtitles. 117 min.
