Sabbia | Chicago Reader

Sabbia is Italian for sand, which makes it a suitable title for this trippy meditation on the beauties of southern California's Coachella Valley. Taking a cue from Koyaanisqatsi, director Kate McCabe uses time-lapse photography to capture desert landscapes and evocative cloud formations; more of this imagery and fewer sequences of a blond woman wandering aimlessly would have made for a better film. Brant Bjork of Fu Manchu contributes a fine psychedelic-rock score, though the kaleidoscopic animation is about as contemporary as tie-dye. 78 min.
