Ka-Tet Theatre Company delivers a sensitively acted rendition of this semiautobiographical 1988 drama by British playwright John Godber. Juxtaposing scenes with monologues, Godber chronicles 40 years in the life of a working-class Yorkshire family: coal miner Harry, his homemaker wife May, May's widowed sister Annie, and Harry and May's would-be writer son, Paul, who wants a richer life than the simple, sometimes stifling one his parents have had. The material is familiar, but the bittersweet script feels true and lived-in. It's complemented by painfully honest performances from a fine eight-person ensemble under Thomas Murray's direction. —Albert Williams
