At 22 years old, Sam Smith sings about heartbreak with the gravitas of someone old enough to remember Nixon. Since the May release of this British songwriter’s debut album, In the Lonely Hour (Capitol), his neosoul ballad “Stay With Me” has snaked up to the number two slot on the Billboard Hot 100. Smith is no stranger to the charts—he appeared on Disclosure’s popular single “Latch” in late 2012—but this year he broke through in the States on the strength of his own songs. Smith is joined for the Miracle on State Street holiday bash (presented by 101.9 FM the Mix) by Mary Lambert, known for appearing with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on the pro-marriage-equality single “Same Love.” (Like Smith, Lambert is openly gay.) The 25-year-old Seattle-based songwriter just released her debut LP, Heart on My Sleeve (Capitol), a raw account of growing up queer in a repressive Christian family. Los Angeles-based indie-rock band Fitz & the Tantrums plays after Lambert but before Smith. —Sasha Geffen
