Samsara | Chicago Reader

Rated PG-13 102 minutes 2012

Shot around the globe, this ponderous documentary might be worth seeing for its colorful 70-millimeter cinematography of everything from abattoirs to cityscapes and religious rituals. It suggests a slide show introduction to existence, presenting one handsome sequence after another but providing no structural framework in which the imagery might resonate. Director-photographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi, Baraka) seems to be making a spiritual statement about the unity of life (the title is a Sanskrit word meaning "cyclic existence"), but any sincerity inherent in the project is overwhelmed by the manufactured awe of its godawful New Age score.
