Savage Grace

Julianne Moore proves game for anything in this pitch-black true-crime reconstruction, where she stars as mercurial socialite Barbara Baekeland, wife of the taciturn heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune (virtuoso Stephen Dillane). When not tirelessly jockeying for status among Europe's smart set in the 1960s and '70s, she dotes on only child Antony (Eddie Redmayne, an arresting new talent). But she's as oblivious to her son's declining mental state as she is determined to cure his homosexuality, which she—disastrously—attempts by bedding him. Director Tom Kalin (Swoon) and screenwriter Howard A. Rodman adapted this oedipal melodrama from Natalie Robins and Steven M.L. Aronson's tell-all tome. 98 min.
