Scientology! The (Unauthorized) Musical The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 1 2009

There's talent galore on display in Annoyance Theatre's bratty new musical, about spaceships preparing to descend on earth to--perhaps--turn everyone into Scientologists. Director Jennifer Estlin maintains an exuberant pace. Larry Pecorella's tunes are catchy, and burrow deep into your brain under Lisa McQueen's punchy musical direction. And, as usual, the cast of Annoyance regulars are crafty as hell. Why, then, is the show so dissatisfying? The problem lies in the ensemble-created book, which indulges in a hundred hilarious tangents--a tumor-riddled atheist trying to save his marriage to a Jesus freak, an unrepentant pyromaniac longing to fuck an alien--but doesn't produce a coherent narrative. As the creators of Rod Blagojevich Superstar! showed, potty-mouthed satire works best when it's streamlined. --Justin Hayford
