In honor of the International Year of Chemistry, the Illinois Science Council has organized a series of workshops on the chemistry of foodstuffs. On Tuesday, June 7, from 7 to 9 PM at Metropolitan Brewing (5121 N. Ravenswood), NU chem professor Shelby Hatch will "celebrate beer," explaining the factors that determine alcohol content, among other topics. On Thursday, June 9, from 7 to 9 PM he'll give a workshop on the chemistry of whiskey at Koval Distillery (also at 5121 N. Ravenswood). And on Wednesday, June 15, from 6 to 8 PM at O'Callaghan's Pub (29 W. Hubbard) he'll speak on the chemistry of chocolate. All sessions are $15; tickets are available at

Friend of the Food Chain Fruzsina Eordogh reports that Kang Nam Galbi (4849 N. Kedzie) is slated to open this week in the Albany Park strip-mall space that used to house the late, great Kang Nam. Owner Fuxi Huang says that he has hired two chefs, one Korean and one Chinese, and will also be serving some of the hybridized Chinese-Korean dishes beloved in Korea.

South Loop pioneer Gioco (1312 S. Wabash) has reopened after a brief shutdown for renovations. Not so partner Jerry Kleiner's 33 Club, in Old Town, which has closed. The former Le Passage has also quietly reopened as Privet (937 N. Rush).

On Sunday, May 22, beginning at 6:30 PM, Jim Javenkoski of the blog Local Food Wisdom will host a four-course locavore dinner by chef Derrick Wcislak of Pure Kitchen Catering with a screening of Ingredients, a documentary on the local-food movement, at Kitchen Chicago (324 N.
