Screamers

Director Carla Garapedian aims for a serious discussion of genocide in the modern world, focusing on the Ottoman slaughter of Armenians in 1915 and arguing that a lack of formal condemnation and involvement from democratic nations like the U.S. only encourages new exterminations like the current one in Darfur. Among her interview subjects is Hrant Dink, the outspoken Turkish-Armenian dissident recently murdered in Istanbul, but most of the screen time goes to American-Armenian hard rock band System of a Down, whose grating concert footage trivializes Garapedian's message. (One fan, celebrating the band's political potency, enthuses that “System is antiwar, they're anti-this, anti-that.”) 91 min.
