Mia Maestro (The Motorcycle Diaries, Alias) stars as an upper-class beauty kidnapped with her spoiled playboy fiance in this slick, violent thriller (2004) that could seriously dampen tourism to Venezuela. While her dad (Ruben Blades) scrapes together the ransom, the hostages match wits with their captors in a breakneck tear through teeming Caracas, where the ever widening gap between rich and poor breeds treachery and corruption. Writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz tries to keep it real with his casting of the very scary abductors: two of them grew up on the city's meanest streets, and the third, hip-hop impresario Carlos Julio Molina, survived a kidnapping in Mexico City.
