Self/less | Chicago Reader

Rated PG-13 115 minutes 2015

The first half hour of this sci-fi thriller plays like an update of John Frankenheimer's cult classic Seconds (1966), as a dying billionaire (Ben Kingsley) agrees to let a mysterious organization transfer his mind into the body of a younger man (Ryan Reynolds). But whereas Frankenheimer took his premise in the direction of Kafkaesque, metaphysical horror, Self/less quickly settles into a routine shoot-'em-up, with Reynolds defending himself and a beautiful woman (Natalie Martinez) from shadowy figures who want them dead. Tarsem Singh, who directed the eye-catching The Fall (2006) and Immortals (2011), brings a comparable level of visual invention to this tale, though as usual his engagement with the material doesn't go very deep. With Matthew Goode and Derek Luke.
