Seminar Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 13 2014

Theresa Rebeck's 100-minute one-act is a clever but shallow study of four young New York writers who have paid $5,000 each to participate in a ten-week seminar with a famous novelist. Gathering in a sprawling, rent-controlled Upper West Side apartment, the insecure students subject themselves and their work to the withering criticism of their arrogant mentor, who turns out to have baggage of his own. Rebeck's wry critique of sex, ego, ethics, and politics in the Manhattan literary world offers juicy roles, and director Marti Lyons's ensemble—Mary Williamson, Keith Neagle, Atra Asdou, and Carl Lindberg as the students, and Tom Hickey as their teacher—play off each other superbly, though the play comes up short in its implausible denouement. The Haven Theatre's staging also benefits from high-quality production values, including an excellent set by Joanne Iwanicka. —Albert Williams
