Senorita Weiner's Top Secret Humor Experiment and Ice Cream Social Club Critic's Choice Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Sun., Sept. 11 2011

There are multiple stand-up comedy shows running every night of the week in Chicago, all vying for pretty much the same audience. You've gotta have a hook to survive, and Señorita Weiner's Top Secret Humor Experiment and Ice Cream Social Club hits the sweet spot between shtick and shlock. Conceived by Junior Stopka and Mike Lebovitz, two of the scene's most unabashedly bizarre performers, the series will combine eccentric comedy with free ice cream for club members, and you don't have to do much of anything to join. The inaugural lineup is eclectic. Stopka is known for wild premises like dating a mannequin, Lebovitz turns mundane situations into trippy tirades, Chris Condren composes songs about werewolves in space, Chad Briggs occasionally takes the stage as a workplace safety instructor, and James Fritz, Jeff Hansen, and Joe Kilgallon each offer playful takes on politics and city life. Since they're all whimsical performers, it's hard to know what to expect other than ice cream. --Steve Heisler
