Serious Business

A modest, innocuous 1999 comedy about a touring improv troupe waiting for its big break. Steven Kurtz's script is thin and conventional, intertwining professional rivalries and romantic breakups with the group's sketches, and like the characters it seems desperate for laughs. Yet director Jim McDermott captures the camaraderie of the business, and the cast really dig into the material, especially those playing minor weirdos (Joseph Nunez, Taylor Nichols). With Meredith Zinner, Ed Cunningham, Brian McCaskill, and cameos by Will Clinger and Rachel Dratch.
