Seven Courageous

Seven socialists on a geological survey establish an arctic base in this risible 1936 propaganda fantasy notable not for any cinematic merit (Sergei Gerasimov's direction is indifferent) but as a prime example of the brain-dead socialist realist style that displaced the revolutionary accomplishments of Vertov and Eisenstein. The only human failing depicted is overenthusiasm for work; the characters are barely differentiated (one smokes a pipe); and the expedition leader's concluding oration about bringing orchards to the tundra inevitably evokes thoughts of Stalin's coming Great Terror and the growing gulags. In Russian with subtitles. 90 min.
