In ten fragmentary sketches, German playwright Botho Strauss combines the everyday with a dash of the absurd to provoke uneasy laughs while uncovering sources of contemporary dread. A man's search for his landlord runs aground in the face of a bureaucracy; a parking garage attendant hires a bodyguard to protect him from every contingency; a scientist's suicide thrusts him into the void, which turns out to be an eternity of tedious conversation with his mousy lab assistant. Though the scenes are fleeting, Strauss deftly captures the bewildered panic of the individual coming into contact with the uncontrollable. Featuring a green but capable cast, Patrizia Lombardi Acerra's staging of Peter K. Jansen's vigorous original translation conveys the brisk swirl of modern life. --Zac Thompson
