Seven Psychopaths

Rated R 109 minutes 2012

The celebrated playwright-cum-filmmaker Martin McDonagh follows his debut feature, In Bruges, with a crime comedy that's brilliantly funny and completely full of shit. An Irish writer with a screenwriting assignment in Hollywood (Colin Farrell) goes on the run with his wacky pals (Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken) after the latter foolishly kidnap the beloved dog of a ruthless gangster (Woody Harrelson). McDonagh takes advantage of his premise to bemoan the gun violence and macho histrionics of Hollywood movies, before shrugging and indulging in both of them. This hypocritical feint will probably guarantee him a rapturous reception by fanboys and critics alike, but I can't remember the last time I was so sorely disappointed by a writer I liked; the movie is undeniably entertaining but as hollow as a bullet wound. With Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko, Gabourey Sidibe, and Tom Waits.
