Sex and Lucia

128 minutes

This film by Julio Medem has dreamlike visuals, lush sensuality, a gorgeous cast, and a plot built on elaborate, self-conscious coincidences. Lucia (the terrific Paz Vega), a waitress in Madrid, flees to an unnamed Mediterranean island because she mistakenly believes her depressed novelist boyfriend has killed himself. While staying at a B and B run by a mysterious woman, she slowly becomes aware that her reality and his fiction have begun to merge. In addition to stunning images of beaches, water, and beautiful people, there are as many barely missed meetings as in a farce by Feydeau, but Medem draws us into a sort of trance, persuading us to accept the implausibilities of the script. In Spanish with subtitles.
