Sex Church, Metz, Pop. 1280 Free Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Oct. 22, 9:45 p.m. 2011

While I don't know if you can technically claim a band is undiscovered when they open a sold-out reunion date for Death From Above 1979 at Metro and another bill for Iceage at the Empty Bottle over Lollapalooza weekend, Toronto's Metz are hands-down less known today than they will be a year from now. The post-punk/hardcore trio has only released three seven-inches thus far (all are available on their Bandcamp page), but each is a testament to Metz's skill at crafting dark, chugging jams that shift from creeping, noisy weirdness to skull-jarring loudness with remarkable ease, a la Louisville's Young Widows. Guitarist/vocalist Alex Edkins works out the riffage while swimming in a swamp of reverb and extracurricular racket, haphazardly pasted together in the best kind of way by bassist Chris Slorach and drummer Hayden Menzies. Recent cuts like "Negative Space" and the demo version of "Wet Blanket" suggest a less sprawling feel to Metz's new upcoming material—the band just finished recording their debut full-length with Holy Fuck's Graham Walsh and are in the midst of shopping it to labels—but that's certainly no slight. I know the barrage of Chicago's fall shows is in full effect right now, but these dudes did us a favor and booked two in one day. Do the right thing. —Kevin Warwick Sex Church headline; Metz and Pop. 1280 open. Sex Church and Metz also play a free in-store at Permanent Records at 5 PM.
