Shackleton's Boat Journey | Chicago Reader

Shackleton's Boat Journey

A 1999 short video about Ernest Shackleton's heroic 800-mile journey in a small boat to South Georgia Island to initiate the rescue of the crew he'd left on an antarctic island. Harding McGregor Dunnett's bland direction offers a mix of still photos, drawings, maps, and narration; the story supplies the drama. Buffeted by hurricane-force winds and giant waves, the crew had to chop ice off the boat in brief shifts; reaching South Georgia, Shackleton and two others crossed unmapped mountain ranges on foot to reach the island's whaling station.
