Shadow Magic

East meets West and tradition meets innovation when a photographer's assistant in 1902 Peking becomes smitten with moving pictures and the daughter of an opera star. This art-house fodder—which is surely bland enough for wider exhibition—was inspired by the lives of a real photographer and “a few unknown Westerners who brought motion pictures to China,” and though it's a movie about the cinema, it somehow manages to be entirely un-self-reflexive. Written by Huang Dan, Tang Louyi, Kate Raisz, Bob McAndrew, and director Ann Hu; with Xia Yu and Jared Harris. 115 min.
