Shadow Town The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 17 2013

Four teenage girls in the Chicago area—a Taiwanese immigrant, an aspiring actress, a junkie's daughter, and a suburban seventh grader—are lured away from their unhappy homes and forced into prostitution by sex traffickers in this earnest drama by Mary Bonnett. Given the subject matter, the show can't help but be upsetting, especially since we're told in the program that the script is based on the experiences of real-life women. But Bonnett's production for Her Story Theater isn't as hard-hitting as it could be, mostly because the writing careens from PSA territory to stagy melodrama, particularly in the handling of the cartoonishly villainous pimp who serves as emcee. Far more affecting are several brief interludes with music and choreographed movement. —Zac Thompson
