Shadrach

The main character in this extended anecdote, as boring as it is precious, is a ten-year-old (Scott Terra) whose progressive, respectable parents encourage him to hang out with a family of once-prosperous landowners who've turned to making moonshine. Told from the perspective of the boy after he's grown up (voice-over by Martin Sheen), the story, set during the Depression, concerns a dying former slave (John Franklin Sawyer) who shows up at the moonshiners' ramshackle home, anxious to be buried with his ancestors. Director Susanna Styron and Bridget Terry based the screenplay on a story by Styron's father, William; with Harvey Keitel and Andie MacDowell (1998).
