Shakespeare's R & J The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 21 2010

In Joe Calarco's reworking, Romeo and Juliet is acted out by four prep-school boys, who infuse the tale of forbidden love with their own youthful intensity, athletic energy, and repressed sexual longings. Shakespeare's magnificent text was originally performed by an all-male cast, of course, but Calarco's contemporary, subtly homoerotic spin fails to shed new light on it. Frank Pullen's bare-bones, imaginatively lit Journeymen production boasts attractive young actors whose crisp, rapid-fire delivery demonstrates impressive technique. But their very proficiency undercuts the sense of spontaneity and subversiveness the show needs. --Albert Williams
