Shakesploitation! The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 2 2008

Three Shakespeare tragedies become three terrible genre films in these sketches by Andy Grigg, first produced by New Millennium Theatre Company, now revived by DBF Productions. Grand Theft Othello reimagines the Moor of Venice as a Shaft-like private dick, Romeo and Juliet II: Apocalypse brings the lovers back to life as flesh-eating zombies, and Ninja Hamlet: Burning Fist of Denmark recasts the gang at Elsinore as characters in a poorly dubbed Japanese movie. A bold affront to bardolators everywhere, Grigg's script is loopy in the extreme, but also well-constructed and inventive. Unfortunately, Josh Miller's sloppy production fails to match either the script's energy or its precision in mimicking film styles. Consequently, many of Grigg's best bits fall flat. --Zac Thompson
