This small pan-Asian dining room is one of four restaurants inside the Peninsula Hotel just off Michigan Avenue. The slender seventh-floor room holds only about a dozen tables, but in nice weather terrace seating is an option. The room is appointed with cool manila walls trimmed in high-gloss red, low-backed black lacquer chairs, and bud vases with a orchid atop each white-linen-clothed table. The menu is heavy on dim sum and appetizers, making this a great option for grazers, with succulent dishes like a shrimp and rice vermicelli roll served with spicy hoisin and peanut sauce. The dim sum menu includes steamed pork buns, turnip cakes with Chinese sausage, peeky-toe crab wontons, and vegetarian dumplings. The entrees range from a delicate seared fluke served with saffron-jasmine rice to a fork-tender but overly salty five-spice duck; Shanghai noodles, also salty, are full of large shrimp and chicken and nicely cooked vegetables. The wine list is more than double the size of the menu, with a broad variety of American, Austrian, French, and Australian bottles along with more than a dozen half bottles and by-the-glass options. The servers are courteous, gentle, and beautifully dressed.
