When: Sun., Jan. 11, 8:30 p.m. 2015

In her work as an educator, flutist Shanna Gutierrez has advocated for an understanding and appreciation of new music by demystifying extended instrumental techniques. She practices what she teaches while playing a full range of flutes in her work with Ensemble Dal Niente, Ensemble Tzara, and other chamber groups—but she restricts herself to just one, the open-holed bass flute, for the new program “Unleashed.” The instrument’s key design affords a greater range of multiphonics and microtones than the standard one, allowing the player to extend the flute beyond its common role as a provider of breathy sound effects. “Unleashed” includes three compositions by Kyong Mee Choi, Eric Honour, and Morgan Krauss that were written specifically for bass flute (and commissioned by New Music USA), as well as two others by Wim Henderick and Francisco Castillo Trigueros that feature it. All of them use prerecorded and live electronics (performed here by Trigueros) which place the instrument within settings of hallucinatory unfamiliarity. —Bill Meyer
