She's Funny That Way

Rated R 93 minutes 2014

Backed by executive producers Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, Peter Bogdanovich tries to revive the screwball comedy of What's Up, Doc? (1972) with this labored farce about a Broadway director (Owen Wilson) and his hooker with a heart of gold (Imogen Poots, replete with a New Yawk accent). After they spend the night together, an unlikely turn of events lands her in the cast of his new play alongside his unsuspecting wife (Kathryn Hahn) and a scheming British costar (Rhys Ifans), who knows about the tryst. Absurd coincidences predominate—at one point, all the principal characters just so happen to dine at the same restaurant—and there are multiple scenes of women scurrying into hotel bathrooms to hide. The giggly men's-magazine tone, especially in Bogdanovich's treatment of call girls, makes the movie seem weirdly anachronistic. With Will Forte, Illeana Douglas, Cybill Shepherd, Richard Lewis, Austin Pendleton, and Jennifer Aniston as a bitchy psychotherapist.
