I know it’s irrational, but I sometimes worry that I like Caddywhompus so much that I’m somehow using up all their potential popularity myself—I can’t think of another reason they aren’t better known. I fell hard for the New Orleans noise-pop duo’s 2010 album, Remainder (Community), which seemed to wrap luminous melodies a la Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear in layers of sheet metal. Caddywhompus’s serrated riffs can get pretty harsh and loud, but the band’s songs are catchy, never confrontational. (Their catalog is also available for free digitally, which you’d think would’ve helped them get noticed by now.) Lately the duo has gravitated toward a quieter approach—last year’s Maze Demos EP (Community/Chinquapin) is a good example of this new sound—which might make its music palatable to an even bigger hypothetical audience. “Feathering a Nest” strips away most of Caddywhompus’s customary distortion, exposing a gleaming pop center, and “Company” sounds like a slightly deranged psych-rock flip of a long lost doo-wop tune. Whatever the band ends up doing with these demos next, I’m sure it’ll floor me again—and no matter how well they’re received, I’ll still think they deserve more. —Leor Galil Shiloh headlines; Caddywhompus, All People, and Ghastly Menace open.
