When: Fri., Oct. 7, 9 p.m. 2011

Guitarist Shinji Masuko kicks out some seriously heavy blues rock in his band DMBQ, but there's no trace of it on his recent solo album, Woven Music (Brah). Masuko plays in the Boredoms too, and he built the album's two meditative, side-length instrumentals from short multitracked guitar passages that originally functioned as prerecorded elements of that group's epic "Boadrum." (He also designed and built the Sevena, the crazy seven-necked guitar that Boredoms leader Yamatsuka Eye plays in concert, and onstage he's charged with keeping the monstrosity in tune—a Herculean task, as anyone who's seen him at work can attest.) "Woven Music for the Blue Steppe" combines elaborate acoustic fingerpicking, astral E-Bow streams, and shimmering cascades of notes that sound like hammered dulcimer or maybe Autoharp; "Woven Music for Silver Ocean" sounds more amplified, with multiple liquid tones swirling and intertwining to create sustained curves of glowing sound. For this show Masuko will play guitar with an E-Bow and other electronics, accompanied by a bassist. —Peter Margasak Solar Fox, Matchess, and Ryley Walker open.
