Shrapnel in Peace

Laconic yet horrifying, this 2000 Iranian feature by Ali Shah Hatami is set among the various scavengers—young and old, men and women—who comb a former battlefield near the Iraqi border looking for scrap metal from exploded shells and mortars. The narrative is fairly predictable, as two boys venture into a minefield in search of greater rewards, but Hatami's careful attention to the characters' arduous, dangerous, and minimally rewarding work generates moments that are alternately pathetic and surreal. 86 min.
