Shrek the Musical Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 1 2013

I've got to admit I was just a wee bit appalled at times—like, say, during the scene where Princess Fiona and Shrek the ogre cement their love with a torrent of farts. But however rude and crude this musical stage version of the beloved animated movie gets, director/choreographer Rachel Rockwell keeps things so genial, so buoyant and sweet at heart that you find yourself surrendering your scruples. It helps greatly that the show isn't just good-natured but neatly crafted. Michael Aaron Lindner is affably gross as the green-skinned title character, though his Scottish accent is a sometime thing. Travis Taylor does his best work on his knees, playing the very short villain, Lord Farquaad. And Summer Naomi Smart does a great job of stealing every scene she's in as Fiona. So what if the kids spend the rest of the summer loudly passing gas for fun? —Tony Adler
