Shrink | Chicago Reader

Rated R 2009

Man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly upward, and when those sparks emanate from a doobie clutched by Kevin Spacey, a smug critique of the American dream is sure to follow. A once-promising actor crippled by an insatiable hunger for close-ups (e.g. his Bobby Darin biopic Beyond the Sea), Spacey plays a Hollywood supershrink and melancholy pothead whose private agony intersects with that of his patients, an assortment of Tinseltown stereotypes played by Jack Huston, Robert Loggia, Saffron Burrows, Dallas Roberts, and Spacey precursor Robin Williams. (There's also a disadvantaged black girl, played by Keke Palmer, apparently inserted by screenwriter Thomas Moffett to deflect any complaint that his characters are just a whining bunch of rich white people). Director Jonas Pate should be run through a wood chipper for daring to quote Fargo. R, 110 min.
