Siddhartha

Conrad Rooks's dream project—a faithful version of Hesse's classic on the search for inner peace—is scrupulous to a fault; and unless you are fully into the subtleties of Hinduism, you are likely to find it rather flat and lethargic (as, I'm afraid, I did). Rooks is perhaps as qualified as any American can be to translate the complexities and myths of Indian religious life into film—and in that respect, this 1972 feature is a fascinating, unforced success. Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman's eyes, did the cinematography. 95 min.
