Side Effects

98 minutes

A bad movie on a vital topic, this 2005 indie feature takes aim at the billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry with the story of a gorgeous sales rep (Katherine Heigl) torn between her conscience and the material rewards of her career. Writer-director Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau spent a decade representing Bristol-Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson, and her movie accurately portrays the big-pharm swag that floods doctor's offices. Yet there's little of the nuance or detail one would expect from a ten-year industry veteran: the executives are all gloating corporate monsters, and the story lurches from heavy-handed satire to heavy-handed drama. Heigl gives a winning performance, though Slattery-Moschkau seldom misses an opportunity to show her prancing around in her underwear.
