Sidemen: Long Road to Glory

Documentary maker Scott D. Rosenbaum pays tribute to three forgotten blues instrumentalists: pianist Pinetop Perkins and drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, both of whom accompanied Muddy Waters in the 1960s and '70s, and the great Hubert Sumlin, whose haunting guitar riffs for Howlin' Wolf in the '50s inspired a generation of white rockers. The three men—all of whom died in 2011—sit for easygoing, folkloric interviews, and a long line of famous acolytes (Gregg Allman, Johnny Winter, Joe Perry, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards) hyperbolize about their heroes. This 2016 release would be watchable if not for its cliched narration, delivered in hopeful sing-song by comedy podcaster Marc Maron.
