Sidewalks of New York

This musical-chairs romance opens with a lazy screenwriter's device—pretending to be a documentary so the characters can give man-on-the-street interviews—but it improves as it unfolds, with the characters sometimes talking to each other, sometimes to the camera, until the distinction melts away. Writer-director Edward Burns's performances in his own movies tend to be better than his scripts (The Brothers McMullen, She's the One, No Looking Back), but here he's written himself a worthy part, playing a spurned idealist whose first attempt to love again just causes more pain. Somewhat more cartoonish New Yorkers also competing for relationships and screen time include a divorcĂ© obsessed with his ex, a cheating husband worried about the size of his penis, and the sympathetic wife and dedicated mistress he doesn't deserve. With David Krumholtz, Rosario Dawson, Heather Graham, Brittany Murphy, Stanley Tucci, and Dennis Farina. 100 min.
