Signs of Life

91 minutes 2013

At the height of World War II, three German soldiers are assigned to protect a ruined fortress off the Sicilian coast. But there's nothing to protect and no one to protect it from. The days drift off into a Mediterranean ennui—one soldier amuses himself by making fireworks; another goes insane, sparked by a magnificent vision of thousands of windmills, churning slowly in the noonday sun. This 1968 film was Werner Herzog's first feature, and while it isn't as consistent as some of his later work, it contains many of the imponderably beautiful moments that became his trademark. In German and Greek with subtitles.
