Joe's mother has promised to tell him the identity of his father; she doesn't, and he resolves to find it out with the help of his best friend, Simon. Simon's blamed for everything that goes wrong in their small town because of his unusual appearance, but he believes he's destined to do something heroic. This friendly, briefly exciting story (1998), inspired by John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, achieves a nice balance between caricature and nuanced characterization and even manages not to be cloying. Written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson; with Joseph Mazzello, Ian Michael Smith, and Ashley Judd. 113 min.
