Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

Boyhood friends separated by divergent career paths to princehood and piracy, Proteus (voiced by Joseph Fiennes) and Sinbad (Brad Pitt) reunite to rescue the Book of Peace from Eris, the goddess of chaos (Michelle Pfeiffer). The pat script by John Logan (Gladiator) doesn't owe much to Homer or Hesiod: the troublemaking Eris gets lines like “Enough talking, time for some screaming.” The heaving computer-generated sea swells don't match up well with the conventionally animated characters. The action scenes are too antic, but directors Tim Johnson and Patrick Gilmore serve up a sweet romantic subplot: Will the dashing Marina, ambassador of Thrace (Catherine Zeta-Jones), opt out of an arranged marriage to the upright but landlubbing prince of Syracuse to travel the high seas with the roguish Sinbad? 86 minutes.
